Girls Inc. of Worcester has received $220,000 from 16 foundations and corporations to fund its science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programming for the coming year, the nonprofit organization announced.
“We are grateful for the support of corporate sponsors and foundations that recognize the long-reaching impact of our STEM programs. Thanks to their commitment, our girls are being mentored and given the unique opportunity to discover science, technology, engineering, and math and learn about related career opportunities that will positively impact their futures,” Victoria Waterman, CEO of Girls Inc., said in a statement.
The STEM programs serve 350 girls from the ages of 10 to 14 when the STEM skills are at a risk of declining, Girls Inc. said. The programs’ goals are to dispel stereotypes about math and science and give girls an opportunity to develop the tools to succeed in school and pursue education and careers in mathematics and the sciences, leading to possible employment in higher-paying careers that can break the cycle of poverty, the nonprofit said.
