Gas Costs Help Consumer Prices Fall

Aided by lower costs at gasoline stations, consumer prices across the United States fell 0.3 percent in November, beating analysts’ expectations, the Labor Department said today.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ gasoline index fell 7.4 percent, which more than offset increases in other indexes. The energy index fell 4.1 percent.

The index for all items except food and energy increased a paltry 0.1 percent. Prices for shelter, transportation services and medical care increased only slightly, between 0.2 percent and 0.3 percent.
