Fitchburg's Workers Credit Union building new Littleton headquarters

Workers Credit Union is renovating a Littleton office building to be its new headquarters, due to open next year.
Workers Credit Union has begun building a new headquarters in Littleton.
Work is underway to renovate and expand a two-story building at 119 Russell St. into what will be the Fitchburg firm's new 60,000-square-foot offices. The building is a short distance from the retail center The Point and I-495's Exit 31.
The credit union said Monday its existing Fitchburg location will remain, housing the company's mortgage and commercial lending divisions, collections, deposit support and loan-servicing departments.
Harvard-based Maugel Architects, which is designing the project, said the headquarters will have a blend of timeless design and modern design elements. The headquarters will feature a cafe, outdoor dining patio and fitness center, Maugel said. The design will include the credit union's branded colors of blue and orange, and designers have included seating areas and open work areas to encourage impromptu collaborations and meetings.
The new office is expected to open next year with enough space for the credit union's senior management team and several administrative departments, for an initial total of around 75 employees. The new space will accommodate the credit union's annual growth of 10 percent to 15 percent a year, and help the company consolidate operations that are now in five locations.
Workers Credit Union, which has more than $1.6 billion in assets, has 15 branches from Lowell to Orange, including two in Fitchburg. It doesn't have any branches in Littleton, which sits about halfway between Fitchburg and Lowell, but plans to add one next to the new offices.
The credit union bought the Littleton property in 2015 for $6.4 million from Littleton Office Center Associates LLP, according to Registry of Deeds records. That purchase included the office building and land adjacent to it where the future branch will go.
