The Fitchburg-Leominster area has the most affordable cost of living in New England, according to the Council for Community and Economic Research.
The index the council has developed sets the national average for the cost of living in urban areas at 100. In the second quarter, the Fitchburg-Leominster area scored slightly above the national average at 103.8 on the index.
New York City, the most expensive on the index scored 209.7. Pryor Creek, Okla., was the least expensive at 84.4.
The least affordable city in New England was Stamford, Conn., which scored 146.5 on the index. Boston scored 131.1 and Providence came in at 122.9.
Data for North Central Massachusetts was collected by the North Central Massachusetts Economic Development Council and Fitchburg State University's Regional Economic Development Institute.
The index is based on the cost of consumer goods and services.
