Firm fined $8,000 for Medway gas spill

A gas delivery company failed to immediately address a spill at a Medway, MassDEP says.
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has fined a Taunton company $8,000 for a diesel fuel spill in Medway the company failed to immediately address.
According to MassDEP, an employee of Dennis K. Burke, Inc. of Taunton failed to take immediate action after a spill on Main Street, failed to notify the department and failed to manage remediation waste while attempting to clean the spill.
In addition to the fine, the company will provide 18 free oil tanker spill training sessions for local municipal fire departments.
The company admitted to delivering diesel fuel to a gas station that had not ordered the fuel, and the delivery resulted in an overflow and the release of about 190 gallons of diesel fuel into the pavement and soil.
At the time of the spill, the company informed a gas station employee the spill was minor and had been cleaned up.
Two days later, the gasoline distribution employee returned to clean the site further, which generated waste contaminated with diesel fuel. Due to persistent odors, the gas station notified the Medway Fire Department and MassDEP.
The delivery company was unable to document where the diesel contaminated material generated two days prior had been disposed, MassDEP said.
