The Federal Emergency Management Agency will reimburse the City of Worcester for operating the 250-bed DCU Center field hospital in the initial phases of the coronavirus pandemic.
The $1,165,630 payment will be in the form of a public assistance grant, according to a Tuesday press release by FEMA.
The DCU opened as a field hospital in April 2020 then closed in May 2020 when the surge in cases subsided. It was then re-opened after a surge in COVID cases in December 2020 and closed again in March 2021.
So far, FEMA has provided almost $1.3 billion in public assistance grants to Massachusetts to reimburse entities in the commonwealth for pandemic-related expenses, including Dean College in Franklin, the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, and Milford Regional Medical Center.
