Federal data show exports driving Mass. economy
The U.S. Dept. of Commerce announced new data today showing exports in metropolitan Boston totaled $22.2 billion in 2013 — a 4.6-percent increase over 2012 — ranking the Bay State 14th in the nation.
Merchandise exports in Massachusetts supported 118,537 jobs in 2013, the Dept. of Commerce said. Export categories for Massachusetts in 2013 included transportation equipment; chemicals; machinery; electrical equipment, appliances and components. Canada, China, Mexico, Germany and Japan were the leading destinations for these exports.
Exports have driven nearly a third of economic growth since mid-2009, according to the Department of Commerce, and account for nearly 14 percent o f the U.S. economy. In 2013, exports of U.S. goods and services totaled $2.3 trillion, and supported 11.3 million jobs annually. About 7.1 million of those jobs were supported by merchandise goods.
“U.S. companies of all sizes are exploring the possible benefits of exporting, and looking beyond our borders to expand their customer base. More than 95 percent of potential customers live outside the United States and crave the world-class products offered by American businesses,” Stefan M. Selig, Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade, said in a statement.
