Discount Retailers Post Strong March Sales

Framingham-based TJX Cos. Inc. ended March with sales of $2 billion, a 19 percent increase over March of last year.

BJ’s Wholesale Club said its March sales increased over last year by 15.7 percent to $1 billion.

Same-store sales at BJ’s, which is based in Natick, increased by 10.6 percent. The company said March sales were helped by severe winter weather during the last week of February.

Food, furniture and health and beauty aids sold well during the month, BJ’s said.

TJX, which operates T.J. Maxx, Marshals, HomeGoods and other discount retail outlets, said same store sales increased by 12 percent over March 2009.

The company said it expects continued increases in customer traffic as the weak economy sends shoppers looking for cheaper goods.
