The Greater Worcester metropolitan area unemployment rate fell 0.6 percentage points in February to 4.4, according to a Wednesday press release from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

There were about 2,240 fewer people unemployed in February than there were in January for a total of 15,794 unemployed individuals in the Worcester metro area, which includes Worcester County and Windham County, Conn. Like most metropolitan areas, Worcester’s unemployment rate was significantly lower than the previous year, when the rate was 7.2

Greater Worcester remains in line with the Massachusetts and U.S. unemployment rates in February, which were 4.3 and 4.1 respectively.

Although unemployment numbers were lower, February saw a dip in the region’s civilian labor force, dropping by about 670 individuals. The labor force is still about 2,000 people smaller than it was before the coronavirus pandemic.

The Leominster-Gardner metropolitan area also saw a significant drop in unemployment in February, falling from 6.0 to 5.2 over the month from January. The labor force remained fairly stable at 79,347, about 400 people fewer than in January.
