Expensive Fuel Drives Import Prices Higher

Import prices advanced 0.9 percent in April after registering a 0.5 percent increase the previous month, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The increases were the result of higher prices for fuel and nonfuel imports. The bureau estimated that 55 percent of the increase was attributable to higher fuel prices.

Export prices also increased in April, rising 1.2 percent after a 0.7 percent advance in March.
