Enterprise takes cleaning to a whole new level
Steve Buchalter loves a grimy workplace. The president and founder of Enterprise Cleaning Corp. in Worcester gets a charge out of showing what a difference his staff can make.
"Over a weekend, an Enterprise Cleaning team can make a shoddy-looking workspace gleam. When people walk in on Monday, they can’t believe it’s the same place," he says.
Buchalter has been working his cleaning magic on businesses throughout Central Massachusetts with a formula he believes is unique in the commercial cleaning industry.
"We take cleaning to a whole other level," he says.
Most cleaning companies do well by their customers at first, Buchalter explains. But after a few months, things start to slip. Trash isn’t emptied; bathrooms aren’t pristine, because the cleaning staff is not being monitored. At Enterprise, there’s an extra level of oversight. Management evaluates cleaning technicians on a nightly basis.
"We are constantly checking up to make sure work is done to the high caliber we promise our customers," Buchalter explains.
Enterprise employees are trained "to clean with their eyes, not from a list," he says, "so if they see shelves that are dusty, they clean them."
Staff are paid a salary rather than on an hourly basis and there’s a clearly defined career path leading to management. After technicians prove themselves and have consistent good reports, they are eligible to become building supervisors and can earn promotion to area managers. These incentives have kept turnover to a minimum, making Enterprise unique in the industry where the opposite generally holds true.
"The harder people work, the more quickly they advance," Buchalter says.
This chief executive doesn’t just talk the talk. He knows the business from the ground up. Buchalter started working part-time for a cleaning company while he was in junior high school and continued through college. After earning his degree, he worked in sales for the company before venturing out on his own three years ago.
In its first year, Enterprise Cleaning made a huge leap from a single account to a contract to clean several buildings totaling one million square feet. After landing that big account, Buchalter hired a manager and together they recruited a staff of 35.
"My manager and I worked day and night to make those offices shine," he recalls.
Buchalter now spends most of his time on business development and has built a support staff for ongoing management of the company.
Enterprise Cleaning Corp extended its reach to the Boston area by landing a contract to clean the offices of radio station WBZ- 1030AM and TV stations WBZ Channel 4, UPN Channel 38 & UPN 28, and into Gardner with the addition of a local hospital.
Good communications with customers and staff has been a key to Enterprise Cleaning Corp.’s success. While it’s important that customers are clear about their expectations, a cleaning service should be forthcoming with creative solutions to cleaning or maintenance problems, according to Buchalter.
Among the many services Enterprise Cleaning offers are:
• Nightly cleaning services
• Carpet cleaning and maintenance
• Post construction clean up
• Floor stripping, refinishing and maintenance
• Window washing
• Day porter/matron services
• Clean room services (restrooms, stairs, elevators)
• 24-hour emergency service
In delivering these services, the company’s managers visit accounts on a regular basis and work around client schedules. Says Buchalter: "They take a pro-active approach and will make suggestions that help keep a workplace looking good."
