MetroWest businesses undertake local sustainability efforts
All economies are not local, but a group of MetroWest businesses think they should be.
The MetroWest Sustainable Business Network is a new program of the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Boston, and has 15 corporate members so far. The members will focus on partnering with each other and other locally-owned businesses in order to implement and maintain environmentally sustainable practices.
One of the founders of the Boston group, Laury Hammel, a co-owner and president of the Longfellow Clubs, a group of tennis and fitness clubs in Natick and Wayland, will spearhead the program's efforts. Hammel is also one of the founders of the Boston group, and a founder of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies, a national group focused on supporting local business networks. He was also a founder of Worcester Local First; a group that encourages consumers to buy their goods and services from local businesses in the Worcester area.
"There are a number of businesses that are becoming green, have sustainable environmental practices, and want to reduce the carbon footprint of the community," Hammel said. "One way to build a more stable world is to do business with people who share your values."
As part of the program's kickoff, Longfellow Clubs in Wayland will offer its first 300 visitors on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 15, a compact fluorescent light bulb. These bulbs use 75 percent less energy and last ten times longer than incandescent bulbs, Hammel said. The club will also offer seminars on how people and businesses can save energy, among other activities.
Another member, Debra Strick of the New England Wild Flower Society, home of the Garden in the Woods in Framingham, is offering businesses with a green ethos to submit sponsor proposals for the society's Green Way booth at its free Earth Day activities on Saturday, April 26. The sponsors will also be featured on the society's Web site.
