Age: 36
Title: Partner
Company: Struck Catering
Company location: Worcester
Residence: Shrewsbury
Career highlights:
Running the daily operations of the business is my full-time position. This involves everything from making sure a catered event is leaving the kitchen at the correct time, to ensuring the bills are paid as well. One thing my business partner/mother, Barbara Cotter has taught me is that no job is beneath you and it takes a maximum team effort to see that each event that we cater is successful.
Community involvement:
Volunteering my time in the community has led to many great friendships and has been very rewarding. My volunteer time is spent with The Rotary Club of Shrewsbury, where I am serving my third term as treasurer. I am also involved with Camp Putnam, which helps place inner city kids in an outdoor environment for a week. There are numerous fundraisers and events in which our business donates food and time to help support local nonprofits such as the Worcester County Food Bank.
Biggest success:
As most small business owners know payroll is usually the biggest bill on the books. In the service industry it’s also your most important! Being able to make payroll for the last 10 years has been my biggest accomplishment. Knowing that you are only as good as your last meal makes you realize that every event is like your first.
Dream Job:
I would love to become a small business consultant. I have a true passion to help people who are running into difficulties solving problems with their business.
Businessperson he most admires and why:
My business partner/mother has been a big inspiration in helping me understand the nature of running a small business. She has been a great mentor in helping me understand the values and responsibilities — as well as accountability — of all your business decisions.
