David Chapin, office manager, Scottrade Shrewsbury branch

Chapin

David Chapin is a Massachusetts native. After going to school in Arizona and then working for Scottrade there, he’s returned to the state to run the investment company’s Shrewsbury office. In this Q&A, he talks about his early aspirations to be a state trooper and how his job involves empowering others.

Vital Stats:
Age: 29
Residence: Worcester
Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance from Park University in Arizona
Previous job: Stock broker in Scottrade’s Tuscon, Ariz., branch office
Start date at new job: Sept. 13, 2010

Q. How are you settling in at your new office?
A. I grew up in Massachusetts, so it’s great to be home, after living and working in Arizona. Since being back, I’ve taken on several new challenges to better serve and educate investors in the Scottrade Shrewsbury branch office.

Q. What's your favorite thing about Central Massachusetts?
A. Worcester is centrally located and close to major cities, like Boston. I really like the closeness to the big cities, but the quiet and close-knit community feeling I get here.

Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
A. Not close at all. I originally thought I’d be a Massachusetts State Trooper. I built a passion for finance and helping others while in college, and working at Scottrade fulfills both.

Q. How far is your commute to the office?
A. It takes me about 15 minutes to travel to the office.

Q. What could local and state governments do to make things better for your business?
A. I think the government can encourage saving and investing with programs for the public at large. It will benefit everyone if families start saving for retirement and their child’s college now.

Q. What's the best way to keep your energy and motivation up when you're having a long day?
A. I’m really thankful to have a good job. Not only do I have a job, but I really enjoy helping people in my community become empowered do-it-yourself investors.

Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?
A. I really enjoy the Buffalo chicken calzone at White City Pizza and subs in White City Plaza.

Q. Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
A. I like to relieve stress through working out at the gym and staying fit. I really enjoy winter sports and golfing.

Q. What's on your to-do list for the next couple of days?
A. I’m preparing for Scottrade’s 30th annual branch manager’s meeting. This is a great opportunity for all of Scottrade’s nearly 500 branch office managers nationwide to meet, learn new things and transfer knowledge with one another.
