Consumer Prices Rise 0.6%

Increases in prices for gasoline and other energy products helped push consumer prices up 0.6 percent in September, the federal government said today.

The report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said the annual rate of inflation at the consumer level over the previous 12 months was 2 percent, up from 1.7 percent in August and the highest since April. The report cited a 7-percent jump in gasoline prices in September, following a 9-percent hike in August, as the chief factors in the September increase.

Meanwhile, food prices increase a mere 0.1 percent in September, and the index for all items other than food and energy rose 0.1 percent for the third straight month.

In the Northeast, prices increased at a slightly slower annual rate of 1.7 percent over the last year.
