Cognex Sees Profitable Q1

First-quarter profits for Natick-based Cognex Corp. rose 60 percent compared to last year to $13.6 million.

Revenues for the company were also up 26 percent to $74.3 million.

Despite the increases on a year-over-year basis, the figures are down slightly from the fourth quarter of 2010, when the company made a $19.7 million profit on $84.9 million in revenues. Those results, the company said, were due in part because of a large one-time order.

The company increased spending in research, development and engineering after adding jobs in those departments.

Cognex makes machine vision technology, including barcode readers and machine vision sensors used in manufacturing and other sectors.
