Cogmedix looks to continue 2016's momentum

Cogmedix had a strong year in 2016 and is looking to continue that momentum. Cogmedix, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Coghlin Companies, provides manufacturing services for electro-mechanical medical devices with a specialty niche in laser-based medical devices.

General Manager Matt Giza talked about what’s ahead for 2017.

Your grew revenue 60 percent in 2016. How is 2017 going so far?

2017 is off to a great start with existing customers as well as new customer opportunities being realized. During 2017, we’ll be launching a variety of new and exciting products into production with applications including robotic exoskeletal systems, surgical lasers, breast biopsy, medical waste sterilization and more. Our expanded medical product engineering services are also off to a great start in 2017 with new and exciting projects in several different innovative technologies. These services focused on our proprietary DFcx™ process - Design for Compliance and eXcellence – are also gaining great traction in our existing customer base, increasing our overall value proposition.

How many people will you hire this year?

It’s always hard to predict how many people we will hire in any given time period, as we are a service provider to a set of customers who have their own varying market cycles. At this point, we would be conservative and say that we will add 10-20 new roles in 2017. There are a dozen or so positions open at this time including assembly, test, inspection, quality engineering, electrical engineering and manufacturing engineering.

Any update on the second location you're looking to add by the end of the year?

We continue to focus on our lean journey, continuously improving, reducing waste and shrinking footprint requirements for each product line we manufacture. We are also looking to add a small second shift during 2017. These efforts are aligned to optimize the output from our 17 Briden St. and 104 Prescott St. locations. Concurrent with this, we are reviewing potential facility expansion options locally with our trusted real estate partners.

Anything else you'd like to add?

During April, Cogmedix had a very successful ISO quality system audit by our certification body TÜV SÜD  America, resulting in our updated certification to ISO 13485:2016.  Cogmedix is one of the first medical device companies in the country to achieve the 2016 version of the standard, and for our first time, also including design controls.
