Unemployment rates dropped throughout the four Central Massachusetts metro areas in September as the region and state have been experiencing a rebound following a year-long high in July.
Each of the four Central Massachusetts metro regions analyzed saw unemployment decreased by at least 0.9 percentage point from August to September in congruence with the state’s overall rate, which fell 0.9 percentage points to 3.6% in September, according to a Tuesday press release from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development using data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The Greater Worcester metro area’s unemployment rate decreased by 1.0 percentage point from 4.5% in August to 3.5% in September. While the area’s rate remained lower than the state’s for the second month in a row by 0.1 percentage point, it was 0.3 percentage points higher than the region’s rate in September 2023.
Unemployment in Greater Framingham sat at 3.2% in September, the lowest rate of the four Central Massachusetts regions. At the same time, the area experienced the region’s smallest decrease in unemployment in September, dropping 0.9 percentage points from 4.1% in August. Greater Framingham’s September rate was 0.5 percentage points higher than its 2.7% unemployment rate of September 2023.
The Leominster-Gardner area had the region’s highest unemployment rate in September at 4.1%. Yet, the area also saw the largest over-the-month decrease in unemployment, dropping 1.2 percentage points from August. Leominster-Gardner had the greatest over-the-year increase of the four Central Massachusetts areas with September’s rate reflecting a 0.7 percentage point increase from the 3.4% rate of September 2023.
Unemployment in the Athol region fell by 1.0 percentage point to 3.9% in September. The area tied with the Greater Worcester metro area for the smallest over-the-year unemployment increase, rising 0.3 percentage points from September 2023’s rate of 3.6%.
