The unemployment rate in Central Massachusetts remained unchanged for July at 8.4 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The government said about 25,300 residents in the Worcester area were unemployed, roughly the same as in June. However, the July report is much better than it was a year ago, when 28,000 were said to have been unemployed, accounting for a 9.4-percent unemployment rate.
But the Boston metropolitan area, which includes Framingham, saw growth of 2.5 percent in non-farm employment from July 2010 to last month, more than twice the national average of 1 percent. That area gained 60,100 jobs, bringing employment on the eastern side of the commonwealth to more than 2.48 million. The government cited a rise in education and health services jobs as key to that growth.
