Two Central Massachusetts businesses have received $300,000 in grants from the commonwealth’s Recycling Business Development Grant program that will enable them to better process and manage packaged food material.
The announcement was made Thursday that EL Harvey and Sons, Inc. of Westborough and Troiano Trucking Inc. of North Grafton had received $100,000 and $200,000 in the grants, respectively. EL Harvey and Sons plans to use the grant to purchase a tank to expand processing, diverting an estimated 10,000 tons per year of organics that is currently landfilled or incinerated, according to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
The grant for Troiano will be used to fund, in part, a Scott Turbo Separator that will enable the facility to accept and process bulk organics that are packaged or have some level of contamination and convert it into high-quality animal feed.
“Continuing to advance opportunities to increase recycling not only helps protect our environment but also creates jobs and stimulates the economy,” said Gov. Charlie Baker in a statement.
