Celebrate National Punctuation Day

When is it proper to use semicolon? What about ellipses? Those are the types of questions organizers of National Punctuation Day want people to consider today.

Today is the seventh annual celebration of National Punctuation Day, which was founded by Jeff Rubin, a California professional writer and lecturer.

Rubin's website has a list of punctuations and descriptions of when it is appropriate to use them.

For example, the website notes that a semicolon should be used to mark a division in a sentence, one where more of a separation is needed than indicated by a comma. A colon, on the other hand, is used when a major separation is needed in a sentence and indicates that what follows is an elaboration of the first clause.

The website also includes links to proper punctuation guides and books.
