Bus Workers’ Strike Avoided

Worcester Regional Transit Authority bus drivers will not go on strike after all.

The labor union representing the bus drivers nixed plans for a strike Friday afternoon and agreed to a 15-day “cooling off” period to continue negotiations on a new contract.

Local 22 Business Agent Christopher Bruce told the WBJ Friday morning that the WRTA bus drivers were planning to go on strike Friday night because the union and management could not reach a deal on a contract.

The WRTA issued a statement Friday afternoon stating that City Manager Michael O’Brien requested a “cooling off period” that would avert the imminent strike. Both sides agreed and will engage in further mediation.
