The National Labor Relations Board's Boston office in the coming weeks will determine the dates and details of balloting that could join more than 275 salaried Boston University lecturers and instructors with unionized faculty at the BU, Northeastern, Tufts, Lesley, Bentley and Brandeis campuses, according to SEIU Local 509.
BU faculty late Friday filed a formal petition with the NLRB seeking to join an SEIU division known as Faculty Forward. The union said the petition was part of a movement that has led part-time lecturers at Tufts to sign their first union contract in 2014, an agreement at Lesley University last year, and a three-year agreement reached in January for adjunct professors at Northeastern University.
"My colleagues and I are on the front-lines, teaching a significant number of important classes and seminars at BU, with a focus on essential writing and communication skills," Bill Marx, a senior lecturer in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Writing Program, said in a statement released by the union. "This action comes down to recognizing the value of the job we do in educating our students, improving the conditions under which we work, and the active role we must play in the decision-making process."
