Shawmut Design and Construction, a Boston-based construction and design firm with offices in several major cities across the country, has opened an office in Worcester.

The new office, located in a building owned by the Worcester Business Development Corp. at 20 Franklin St., will allow for better collaboration with Central Massachusetts clients, according to a company press release issued Wednesday.

“We’re incredibly proud to expand our presence in Worcester with the opening of this new office. While this is a new physical space for Shawmut, it represents a deepened commitment to the Central Massachusetts community where we’ve been building for nearly two decades,” Kevin Sullivan, executive vice president, New England region at Shawmut, said in the press release. “This office not only strengthens our ability to serve our clients more directly and efficiently, but it also allows us to bring our talented employee-owners closer to the partners and projects that shape this vibrant city.”

Worcester-area clients of Shawmut include IPG Photonics, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the College of the Holy Cross, UMass Memorial Medical Center, Worcester Academy, UMass Chan Medical School, and Clark University. The company worked with UMass Chan to help construct the school’s $350-million new education and research building and with Clark to construct its Center for the Media Arts, Computing, and Design.

Shawmut, an employee-owned company, has 11 offices including locations in Boston, Providence, New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. The company is worth $1.6 billion, according to the press release.

The site of Shawmut’s new Worcester office is also home to Clark’s downtown office of its Small Business Development Center, which opened in September.
