Bill Pieczynski has worked in college fundraising for years -first at his own alma mater, Catawba College in North Carolina. Since 2006, he's been at Nichols in Dudley, where he just got promoted from associate vice president to vice president. In this Q&A, he says he first got interested in the higher education world before he was even a college student, because of his love of sports. And he said he's still a fan of the local teams.

Q. How are you settling in at your new office?

A. Just fine. I'm fortunate to have a great team already in place in the Advancement and Alumni Departments.

Q. What challenges do you see in your new position?

A. In recent times, fundraising has become a challenge for all nonprofits. But Nichols has a great story to tell, so it is merely getting in front of the right people and sharing it with them.

Q. What's your favorite thing about Central Massachusetts?
A. It's a great place to raise a family.

Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school that you'd end up doing?
A. I have always been a fan of higher education, first through sports, then as a student and now as an administrator.

Q. How far is your commute to the office?
A. 17 miles, 30 minutes.

Q. What could local and state governments do to make things better for your business?
A. I feel that both the higher educational institutions and local governments can do more working together. Higher ed is major industry in Massachusetts and we all benefit from its success.

Q. What's the best way to keep your energy and motivation up when you're having a long day?
A. Call on our Nichols volunteers and supporters, as their enthusiasm certainly inspires me.

Q. Where's the best place to get lunch near your new location?

A. Dudley House of Pizza

Q. Do you have any hobbies outside of work?
A. Golfing and following the local sports teams.

Q. What's on your to-do list for the next couple of days?
A. Even though I have been for here for nearly five years, I am still getting to know our trustees and other volunteer board members that have helped make this institution as successful as its been.
