The flagship location in a chain of women’s underwear stores closed last week, putting 60 out of work.
Abercrombie & Fitch shut its Gilly Hicks store in the Natick Mall Jan. 6, according to a letter sent Dec. 31 to the commonwealth’s Department of Career Services. The chain was intended to compete with lingerie stores such as Victoria’s Secret.
The lost jobs at the Nick site include 40 models (employees who interact with customers), 16 workers responsible for tagging and inventory, three managers and a stock room position.
Abercrombie CEO Mike Jeffries was on hand in Natick in January 2008 to launch the Gilly Hicks chain. But the concept never really caught on, and Abercrombie announced in November that it would close all 28 of its Gilly Hicks stores by the end of March.
Abercrombie will continue to sell Gilly Hicks apparel in the company’s Hollister stores and in direct-to-consumer channels.
