Workplace accidents, violence and work-related disease claimed the lives of 47 Massachusetts workers over the past year, including 10 in Central Massachusetts, according to a report by the state AFL-CIO and the Massachusetts Coalition for Occupation Safety and Health.
Workers who were killed include Framingham firefighter Michael Urban, 57, who died from work-related cancer; Raymond Lillstrang, a lead custodian in Pepperell; Kevin Bell, operations officer at Creative Biomass in Fitchburg who died in an accident at the plant; Michael Wheeler, a pilot killed in a helicopter crash in Boxborough; Douglas Loyd, a Fitchburg teacher who suffered a fatal heart attack after breaking up a fight between students; Worcester firefighter Kevin Turner; Jakub Murcina, a roofer killed while working at a condominium complex in Marlborough; Gregory Vilidnitsky, a civil engineer hit by a drunk driver while working at a Framingham construction site; Melville Dill, a pilot who died in a Fitchburg plane crash; and Gregg Andrews, a flight instructor and mechanic killed in a Spencer plane crash.
The workers will be remembered at a service on the State House steps today at 12:15 p.m.
