2011 40 Under Forty: Myles Bristowe

CHIEF MARKETING OFFICER, CommCreative

Company location: Framingham

Residence: Mansfield

Favorite movie: "Apollo 13."

Age: 39

Career highlights: My career began in the deli of a grocery market in Wilmore, Ky. To promote some lunch specials, I had drawn a picture of a hot dog on deli paper with crayon. The sign somehow caught the eye of a successful businessman who owned a database of every thoroughbred horse that had ever lived. He stepped up to the counter and asked, “Who drew this here hotdog?” “I did,” I said. He removed the cigar from his mouth and said, “You should work for me.” I traded my deli apron for a desktop computer and the rest is history.

Community involvement: In 2006, the Boston Chapter of the American Marketing Association was in crisis. In order to save the chapter, a few of us met every Saturday morning from 8:30-10:29 (because no one should ever meet for two hours). We met on 170 consecutive Saturdays, rebuilding the chapter one week at a time. I served as chapter president two terms, was awarded the 2011 Chapter Leader Volunteer of the Year award, and given an honorary lifetime membership in the AMA.

Biggest success: In the early 90s the web was not widely known and everyone around me was still quite skeptical. After a few years, “dot-com” was plastered on billboards and on TV commercials, and the world was rushing to what I do. In 1995, we flew home for the Thanksgiving holiday and my father-in-law threw open the front door with the widest of smiles and said, “Son!” That’s when I knew I was doing something important.

Biggest challenge: The greatest challenges I’ve faced in business are when I must make “business decisions” that adversely affects people’s lives.

Mentors: I have had many strong mentors throughout my career. My boss, Robert Fields, has held me accountable, which has increased our success. As a coach, he has encouraged me to make decisions, which has helped me grow as a leader. As a friend, he has helped me remember that family always comes first.

Hidden talent: When I was 16, my first job was to draw editorial cartoons for the Blackstone Valley Tribune, a weekly newspaper in my hometown, Whitinsville. I hadn’t really drawn much of anything for nearly 25 years and last year I began drawing again.
