DIRECTOR, The Volunteer Family
Company location: Boston
Residence: Ashland
Favorite color: Yellow, as assigned to me by my daughter while playing a board game when she was 5.
Age: 38
Career highlights: After becoming a mom, I became acutely aware of the importance of family and community and how the two are interrelated. But finding a volunteer opportunity that I could do with my kids was a difficult. My frustration with the process led to the creation of The Volunteer Family, a single place where families looking to volunteer could find an opportunity that they could do together. Today The Volunteer Family offers 30,000 volunteer opportunities in 40 states.
Community involvement: I am fortunate that my job allows me to be very involved in the community. I manage The Volunteer Family and the Future Philanthropists program. I also hold a position as managing partner of Massachusetts Nonprofit Support Services, where I personally consult with three or four charities per year. I am on the board of directors of Leadership MetroWest and the MetroWest Nonprofit Network, and I chair the Ashland Youth and Family Advisory Committee.
Biggest success: My biggest success has been starting the Future Philanthropists program with the support of the Highland Street Foundation. In two years, we have managed 21 programs at 11 different schools and community-based organizations. The program has an incredible influence not only on the lives of the students, but also within the community.
Biggest challenge: My biggest challenge professionally has been balancing my family life with my work. It really helps to have the flexibility to be able to manage my own schedule, work with wonderful people and have a supportive husband. But I would be lying if I didn’t say that I haven’t recently had a conference call or two from the soccer field!
Hidden talents: I love running and just competed in the Boston Marathon. I also love to scrapbook.
