2011 40 Under Forty: Julie Horrigan

VICE PRESIDENT OF DEVELOPMENT, Boys & Girls Club of MetroWest

Company location: Marlborough

Residence: Fiskdale

Favorite movie: "The Bodyguard" (Whitney Houston is undeniable in her prime!)

Age: 31

Career highlights: As a former “club kid,” I grew up witnessing the positive impact that our programs make on young people and I stayed involved as a volunteer after college while working in business development and event planning. Six years ago, I followed my passion and made the transition to lead the advancement initiatives for the Boys & Girls Club of MetroWest. I recently completed my master’s degree in public administration and will be starting as an adjunct professor in the fall.

Community involvement: As you can imagine, my charity of choice is the Boys & Girls Clubs of MetroWest, but I am also a long time supporter of the United Way of Tri-County. I volunteer with the Patrick Donnelly Foundation, raising college scholarship funds for deserving high school students and contribute to a variety of campaigns at Mary Queen of the Rosary Parish in Spencer. As part of Leadership MetroWest’s 2011 Leadership Academy class, I helped organize the academy’s community service project: assembling more than 100 care packages for domestic violence victims.

Biggest success: I am extremely proud to be part of the senior leadership team at the Boys & Girls Clubs of MetroWest. Over the past five years, we have positioned the organization to expand programs and increase the number of kids that we serve on a daily basis — more than 3,200 youth annually.

Biggest challenge: Raising critical funds during tough economic times is a challenge for any development professional. However, the real challenge is to deepen the relationships with existing donors while constantly qualifying new opportunities and connecting with new prospects.

Mentors: My parents, Noreen and Paul, have played a huge role in shaping the person and the professional that I am today. They set high expectations for all of their children, emphasizing the importance of hard work, strong moral character and giving back to the community.

Hidden talent: I love photography and have been hired as a professional photographer for weddings and corporate events.
