2010 40 Under Forty: David Balducci

Owner-Operator, McDonald’s Sellia Corp.

Company location: Spencer

Residence: West Brookfield

Age: 32

Career highlights: I started working at a McDonald’s as a crew person in June of 1994 and worked my way up through the ranks to manager, supervisor, director of operations and then to my current role as a local McDonald’s owner/operator. Like me, 10 percent of McDonald’s owner/operators in the United States started in the restaurants. McDonald’s offers good jobs, future opportunities for growth, and I’m proud to work here.

Community involvement: I donate my time wherever needed. I’m a member of the Spencer Exchange Club, a civic organization comprised of local business people who do fundraisers for local causes in our community. I am also a member of the Worcester County Deputy Sheriff’s Association. Our local Ronald McDonald House Charities chapter has been very focused on the Worcester area. Recently, we announced the opening of the state’s first Ronald McDonald Family Room at UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center, which serves as a supportive area for adult family members of critically ill children being treated at the hospital. We also celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, which provides cost-effective, high-quality medical, dental and health education services to local children and their families.

Biggest success: My biggest success professionally was becoming a McDonald’s owner/operator. When I attended college full-time, I also managed a restaurant, which was a lot to juggle. By applying myself and staying focused, I was able to grow professionally and finally achieve the honor of being an owner/operator.

Mentors: I have two mentors: my father and my father-in-law. My father taught me to continue to work hard and that everything would pay off. Joe Spadea, my father-in-law, is also a local McDonald’s owner/operator, and he helped me get where I am today. He brought me up through the ranks and helped me understand the business. He taught me to strive to be the best within McDonald’s.
