101 Hiring Interns

Real-world work experience is critical for most college students, but getting the most out of a college intern requires a lot more than simply selecting the best candidate. The following suggestions should help aspiring businesses maximize the return on their intern investment.

In their shoes. To get the most out of your interns, it’s important to consider their needs, as well.

“Interns are often attracted to the large, established name-brand companies because that name can puff up their resume,” says Melanie Brooks at Inc.com. “To compete against bigger companies, smaller firms need to take the time to create an internship that will benefit the student’s career.”

Make it legitimate. The best internship is the one that doesn’t feel like one.

“The key to a successful intern program is to treat the position as a legitimate job and the intern as a genuine employee—not just a glorified gofer,” says Erica Ramus at Folio Magazine. “Be prepared to do some training….When you hire new employees, you still have to spend time teaching them the job and breaking them in. Interns are no different.”

Take action. You must devote enough attention to your internship program if you want it to succeed.

“Assign someone in your business (it may just be you) to have overall responsibility for your internship program, and be allotted the time and resources to properly manage it,” says Kelly Andrew Brown at small-business-guru.com

Come prepared. The best internship programs are those with clear plans and strategies.

“Interns need a clear sense of guidance and structure, as they may be in a business for the first time,” says Brown. “Schedules, work plans and deadlines will help.

“Documentation is very important for effective learning to take place,” she continues. “It is strongly advisable that an employer and intern create mutually agreed upon learning objectives.”
