There may be enough talk about corporate cultures to convince you that they’re important. But understanding not only how to develop one, but how to develop the right one, is another matter entirely. The following advice will help you to cultivate a culture worth keeping.
Keep it simple. The best way to comprehend a corporate culture is to define it as simply as possible.
“My definition of culture is ‘the way we do things around here,’” says Andy Hanselman at management-issues.com.
“It’s a bit simplistic, I know, but that’s my point. Demystifying it is a key starting point. Many businesses don’t address it because it’s deemed too complicated.”
Ready for action. “In the same way that great leaders shape and communicate a vision, they also spell out a picture of the culture they are striving for,” Hanselman says. “Remember this is about action, not words. If you measure individuals on results alone, regardless of their behaviors, then you’re asking for trouble. Successful companies reward the behaviors they want as well as results.”
Through company-tinted glasses. Some-times all it takes is the proper perspective.
“Encourage your employees to filter everything they do through the lens of the brand and to look for both opportunities and inconsistencies,” says Steve McKee at BusinessWeek.
“When your employees are clear about the company’s orientation and intentions, they can address elements of their jobs that are inconsistent or in conflict with those intentions, improving your product or service and creating better customer experiences.”
Be committed. The only way to create and/or change your corporate culture is to determine its significance.
“Make developing corporate culture one of the top five priorities for your business,” says Lana Holmes at allbusiness.com.
“Build your culture on clear vision, attainable goals, a genuine concern for your employees’ professional growth, an appreciation of their contributions to your success and companywide rewards for successful per-formance.”
