10 Things I Know About...Selling Like A Girl

Jeanne Worrick of North Grafton has 20 years of sales experience in the petroleum industry, which is chronicled in her memoir, Sell Like A Girl (published in 2008). She can be reached at Jeanne@selllikeagirl.com.

10. RELATIONSHIPS
If you don’t create lasting connections with your customers you will lose them the first time something goes wrong. And something is bound to go wrong.

9. FOLLOW THROUGH
Communication is key so answer your phone, return missed calls and always follow up.

8. FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTHS
Do what you’re good at and you will succeed. By forgetting about your weaknesses and building on your strengths you will develop the confidence to propel you in the right direction.

7. EXERCISE YOUR INTUITION DAILY
Start listening to those hunches and queasy feelings throughout the day. Your subconscious is sending you messages all day long. It’s time you start paying attention to them.

6. LISTEN
The gift of gab is a double-edged sword. It’s not just listening to their words; the whole package of gestures, inflections and body language can often convey something very different than what the words are expressing.

5. EMPATHY
To empathize you must truly understand what they are feeling and going through. When you feel that with your customer, you are a consummate sales professional who has the ability to give the highest service to a customer in every situation.

4. WIN-WIN
Negotiations should create a win for both sides, not bragging rights for the sales person.

3. THE BUCK STOPS HERE
Don’t be afraid to admit your mistakes. Follow it up with an apology and then make the situation right.

2. HAVE FUN
To be the best you can be you must feel comfortable being yourself. If you’re not enjoying your work, it’s time to move on.

1. GENDER SPECIFIC
Sales books written by men don’t always apply to women. Men and women think differently. Don’t stress over trying to apply male sales approaches; they may not work for you. Use what’s inside of you. You’ve got the goods, now go out and sell like a woman.
