10 Things I Know About... Networking

10. CARRY CARDS

You would be surprised at how many times people come to a networking event or attend a meeting without business cards to hand out. Always check your business card supply prior to heading to an event.

9. TALK LESS, LISTEN MORE

If you concentrate on what the other person is saying, you will not only learn valuable information, but you will indicate to the speaker that you are interested in building a relationship. Over the long term, this is the best way to grow your business.

8. BE BRIEF

You will make better use of any networking opportunity if you can tell others what you do in less than 60 seconds.

7. BE PATIENT

Networking, when practiced consistently and over time, will foster stronger relationships which in turn produce referrals and additional business.

6. MAKE INTRODUCTIONS

When you arrive at an event or meeting, scan the room for at least one person you know.

5. SILENT LANGUAGE

When someone is talking to you, concentrate on what they are saying. Don’t let your eyes wander. Incline your ear toward the person you are speaking with to indicate that you are really interested in what they are saying.

4. FOLLOW-UP

If you make a connection, follow up with an e-mail or phone call to thank them for taking the time to speak with you about their business.

3. BECOME A MEMBER

Join a formal networking group. This will provide you with countless opportunities to talk about your business. People do business with people they know and trust. Belonging to a group lends credibility to your business, enhancing your reputation beyond your own sphere.

2. PRACTICE

The more you participate in networking, the more comfortable you will be talking about your business. Confidence is a powerful magnet and others are more likely to want to do business with you if you have confidence in yourself and your product.

1. SMILE

Others will see you as approachable and likeable, which is the first step in building connections!
