10 Things I Know About... Creativity

10. Daily Writing

Write at least one paragraph per day. Explore unique experiences, observations, special moments and give details.

9. Centering

When you are ready to do creative work, take 60 seconds to center. Sit comfortably, close your eyes and relax.

8. Brainstorm

Reserve time to brainstorm in an inspired sky’s-the-limit way. Rules and logic have no place here.

7. Ask Questions

Each week, write down 10 of the best questions you can think of that will move you towards your juiciest goals and aspirations. This will set a creative juggernaut in motion — your subconscious mind.

6. Incubation Time

When possible, put a project on the back burner if the ideas aren’t coming. You might have a wonderful idea but perhaps something has to click in your mind for it to build momentum. A planted seed needs time and nourishment to grow.

5. Capture That Idea

Get in the habit of capturing every new idea without judging it first. Keep an inexpensive digital recorder close by and record any ideas that surface.

4. Pathway To Growth

Have a system in place to move an idea from conception, through its development and into its finished form — where it can serve others.

3. Constant Improvement

Identify your weakest learning style, and dedicate time to work on it. If you feel you are not a visual learner, take up chess. If you wish to strengthen your auditory skills, listen to poetry.

2. No Boundaries

Apply ideas from different fields of study. Singularity Theory is a mathematical concept wherein subtle changes in a system can lead to an abrupt powerful change. How could this idea energize a business strategy?

1. Adjust Your Lens

The completion of any creative project requires you to work with both a near-sighted and far-sighted lens. By lens I mean mindset. Sometimes you must focus on specifics and other times you think in much broader terms. Adjust your lens in or out to best support where you are in the project.
