As of March, the Northeast region of the country remains the most expensive to employ workers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The average private sector employer’s per-hour cost for one employee was $32.99, beating out the Western U.S., where employers incurred $30.03 in costs per employee hour.
Employers in the South spent $26.60 per hour, representing the lowest cost in the country.
In the Northeast, wages and salaries accounted for $22.81 per hour on average, while benefits added up to $10.17 per hour. Insurance costs averaged $2.79 per hour, legally required benefits like Social Security averaged $2.69 per hour, and paid-leave benefits averaged $2.48 per hour.
