At the 148th annual meeting of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce held in December, keynote speaker Ed Lambert, executive director of the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education, spoke about the alliance’s opposition to a 2024 ballot initiative seeking to remove MCAS performance as a condition for high school graduation. Lambert said eliminating the MCAS requirement would be a setback to educational reforms made since the state overhauled its education system with the Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993. Supporters of the initiative — including the Massachusetts Teachers Association — disagree, claiming that high-stakes exit exams don't increase academic achievement.
