Worcester Polytechnic Institute will break ground next week on an $80-million smart academic building the university hopes will connect students, faculty and researchers with partners in government and industry to help solve the world’s problems.

The 100,000-square-foot facility will include versatile learning spaces, research space and faculty offices. In addition, the building will include an integrated Student Academic Services Center, physically connecting offices of the Registrar, Academic Advising and Resource Center, Disability Services and Career Development Center.

Navigation and accessibility from Boynton Street to the top of the university’s hill, WPI said in an announcement.

The building is expected to open in January 2022.
