World Energy Solutions Inc. of Worcester recently helped run the 12th quarterly carbon dioxide auction for the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative Inc., yielding $25.5 million.
The auctions, which began in 2008, allow companies to purchase “allowances” to emit carbon dioxide. The buyers are generally electrical generators and their corporate affiliates.
The 10 participating states sold 12.5 million current allowances, representing 30 percent of the allowances the states offered, and 943,000 future allowances, or 51 percent of what was on offer.
New Jersey, which announced plans to withdraw from the regional group in May, did not sell any future allowances.
The most recent auction’s yield was the lowest of any of the 12 auctions so far. The previous auction, held in March, yielded $83.4 million. The proceeds support energy efficiency and job creation efforts.
