Worcester State's First 'Growth District'

The state has chosen Worcester's Lincoln Square/North Main area as its first "Growth District."

The program allows state and local officials to identify areas for major commercial, residential or mixed-use development. Identification as growth districts qualifies those areas for state help in permitting, site preparation, infrastructure improvements and marketing. The districts will also be put on a "fast track" for groundbreaking.

The Lincoln Square/North Main growth district includes WPI's Gateway Park biotechnology research center development. The area totals more than 81 acres of land to be known as Innovation Square, which will be home to more than 1 million square feet of commercial space and more than 350 housing units.

The announcement was made this morning at Gateway Park by a group of city and state government officials, including Daniel O'Connell, state housing and economic development secretary and Worcester Polytechnic Institute President Dennis Berkey.
