Worcester Firm Regenerates Muscle Use In Mice

Officials at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Worcester-based biotech company CellThera said they are pleasantly surprised with the positive results achieved from the company's therapy that regenerates muscle tissues in mice.

Officials with the company and school said the advancement could open the door for new clinical trials for the biotech startup located at WPI's Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center in Gateway Park.

"We are pleased with the progress of this work, and frankly we were surprised by the level of muscle regeneration that was achieved," said Raymond Page, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at WPI and chief scientific officer at CellThera.

CellThera is developing a therapy that, through initial studies, has shown it can regenerate severely damaged muscle tissue. As part of the recent test, CellThera scientists surgically removed a large section of leg muscles in a mouse, which were eventually restored to near normal function using the therapy developed by Cell Thera. The findings were published in the magazine Tissue Engineering.

The company has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense, which is interested in the use of the therapy to treat people who suffer serious wounds or the loss of limbs.
