There were 1,213,440 ride sharing trips with companies like Uber and Lyft started in Worcester County last year, an average of about 3,324 rides each day, according to a new state report.
Worcester alone accounted for most of those trips with nearly 849,000 trips started in the city, and nearly 824,000 trips ended in Worcester, ranking it the ninth-highest Massachusetts city in rides with Uber, Lyft or other rideshare services.
Worcester County, however, ranked No. 5 on the state Department of Public Utilities’ list of rideshare users with over 1.2 million trips starting in the county.
Framingham ranked second among Central Massachusetts municipalities with 321,244 trips starting in the city. Other towns reporting high rideshare user rates are Natick with 153,110, Marlborough with 84,122 and Shrewsbury with 64,166.
Statewide, there were about 64.8 million rideshare trips in 2017, compared to 408 million public transportation trips last year.
Also compiled with the data was the speed of the trips. With heavy traffic in Greater Boston, those trips average speeds around 14 to 16 miles per hour, while Worcester trips average about 24 miles per hour. Half of all cities and towns had trips at an average speed of at least 30 miles per hour.
Boston, of course, took home first place with a total of 34.9 million rides beginning in the city. That mark is about five times higher than the next highest, Cambridge, with just more than 6.8 million. Somerville and Brookline had the most trips after Boston and Cambridge.
