Worcester chamber to endorse gig worker bill

Timothy Murray, president and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce

The Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce intends to announce its support for a bill in the Massachusetts House of Representatives that would classify gig workers, such as for ride sharing apps, as independent contractors and not employees.

The chamber intends to show its support at an event on noon Tuesday at the Flying Rhino Cafe on Shrewsbury Street. The event is also being hosted by the Shrewsbury Street Area Merchants Association, and will feature restaurant owners and various gig workers who will also express support for the bill.

A description of the event is described as the organizations gathering to “show support for a collaborative solution that grants rideshare and delivery drivers continued flexibility and access to new benefits.”

The event is part of the Flexibility and Benefits for MA Drivers campaign, which is in support of the bill. The bill also faces strong opposition from groups like Massachusetts Is Not For Sale, and current Attorney General Maura Healey, who is bringing a lawsuit against companies like Uber.

Unlike in Boston, the Worcester area does not have a robust public transportation system, meaning more people may need to rely on apps like Uber to get around in the city. However, prices for rides in the area tend to be lower than in Boston, meaning drivers get paid less.
