Worcester Chamber CEO to co-chair state business, transportation coalition

Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Timothy Murray will co-chair a new pro-business and transportation group to boost the state’s public transportation infrastructure.
The group, called the Massachusetts Business Coalition on Transportation (MBCT), will develop and promote a collaborative statewide business agenda for transportation, the coalition announced Wednesday.
The formation of the group comes as traffic becomes increasingly congested, leading to demand for more and better public transportation as the business community becomes frustrated with the state’s transportation systems and services.
Murray will be joined by James Rooney, president and CEO of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce; Wendy Northcross, CEO of the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce; and Richard Sullivan, president and CEO of the Western Massachusetts Economic Development Council.
One other Central Massachusetts group, the 495/MetroWest Partnership, will join several other state business groups on the coalition.
The MBCT’s formation comes after Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo called for the business community to help state leaders deal with the state’s transportation issues.
The coalition’s work around creating new revenues for transportation will be coordinated with the efforts of Senate President Karen Spilka (D-Ashland), who leads a working group charged with examining state revenue sources.
“A modern and efficient statewide transportation network presents the opportunity to address the Commonwealth’s critical housing and economic development needs,” said Murray. "The MBCT’s goal is to provide pathways including possible funding mechanisms on how to create a state-of-the-art transportation system across Massachusetts.”
