Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration on Tuesday announced $2.3 million in grants to the City of Worcester, which will go toward the redevelopment of the former Table Talk Pies site near the Polar Park baseball stadium and a Worcester Housing Authority reconstruction project.
The four-acre Table Talk Pies site is the project of Boston Capital Development, who put forward plans in January to construct a six-building, $150-million residential and commercial area in the place of the dessert manufacturer’s former headquarters.
This most recent grant allotted $1.25-million to fund the construction of Spruce Street, a one-way road through the middle of the property between Washington and Green Streets. The addition, which was approved by the Worcester Planning Board in July, is meant to improve walkability for residents and shoppers once the development is complete. It is part of the project’s first phase, which will also include a 77-unit affordable housing complex.
The other $1 million of the Worcester grant will support an initiative by Worcester Housing Authority to encourage neighborhood engagement for the tenants at the 372-unit Curtis Apartments, according to Baker's press release. The project will fund the installation of a perimeter fencing and lead to the addition of 18 units of new housing at the Curtis Apartments, six of which will be fully accessible.
The grants are part of the state’s MassWorks Infrastructure Program, which has provided 56 grants totaling $66.5 million this year.
