Worcester Assistant City Manager Nicole Valentine will step down from her position on Feb. 8.

“This is a very personal decision based on quality of life and second chances as a three-year cancer survivor,” Valentine said in a statement WBJ received from the City of Worcester.

Valentine has served as assistant city manager since September 2021. She was named deputy assistant city manager in July 2019 and has worked for the city since 2011, according to her LinkedIn page.

Valentine will return to the nonprofit sector with an unspecified organization serving first responders, according to the statement.

Prior to working with the City, Valentine served as director of emergency service and public affairs at the Central and Western Massachusetts chapter of the American Red Cross in Worcester.

“One of the proudest moments of my tenure was to stand and watch my dearest friend and colleague Eric Batista stand before us and be sworn in as city manager,” said Valentine, who served alongside Batista when they were both assistant city managers.

Batista was named city manager in November, replacing Edward Augustus, who resigned in May and took a position as chancellor at Dean College in Franklin. Batista is the first person of color to serve in the position on a non-interim basis.

Hung Nguyen, who serves alongside Valentine, was appointed interim assistant city manager in August, replacing Eric Batista. His status became permanent with the formal appointment of Batista to city manager.
