The Worcester Art Museum on Wednesday said it will reopen to visitors on Oct. 7, following a lengthy closure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The museum will institute a number of social distancing regulations, including requiring visitors to register in advance for timed entry and limiting visitor groups to five people each. The museum will be open on Wednesdays from noon to 4 p.m., as well as Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended hours offered on the third Thursday of each month. The museum will be open on Columbus Day, which this year is Oct. 12.

The museum first shut down in March when Gov. Charlie Baker closed non-essential businesses to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The museum was eligible to reopen in July during Phase Three of Baker's economic reopening plan, but opted to stay closed until October.

"While visiting this fall and winter will look and feel different in order to keep everyone safe, the museum’s phenomenal collection of art and its power to heal and comfort, will be here for all to enjoy,” said museum Director Matthias Waschek, in a statement. “We have been waiting for this day for nearly six months and can’t wait to see our community here again!”

The museum will provide several free virtual programs, including what it calls Zip Zoom Tours, Arms and Armor Presentations, a Fall Community Day and a Master Series Third Thursday Art Talk. Details about this programming and the museum’s admissions policies are on the WAM website.
