Worcester Art Museum commences $2M library addition

The Worcester Art Museum has begun construction on a 3,400-square-foot addition to house its art research library.

The $2.1-million project is expected to be complete in early 2023 and will include amenities and programming for visitors, according to a Wednesday press release from WAM. The two-story addition will offer a reading room and access to some of the library’s collection on the upper level, with the majority of the collection archived in the lower level.

The current art research library was created in 1909 about a decade after the museum was founded. The space will close in June as the museum transitions the collection to the new space.

“This investment in the museum’s library is transformative, a major improvement to our ability to serve those who work at WAM and the wider community,” said Rebecca Morin, WAM’s head librarian, in the press release. “The need for reliable sources of information remains essential, and we look forward to continuing this work in our new home.”

The library project is one of many capital investments WAM has made and is planning for the future, according to the release. In early December, the museum opened its new entrance on Lancaster Street, a $2.7-million project meant to increase accessibility. WAM completed another accessibility project for its Salisbury Street entrance in 2015.

Looking forward, WAM will construct a 4,000-square-foot gallery space to house its collection of arms and armor, which was acquired in 2014 following the closure of the Higgins Armory Museum.
