Westford's Spine

The Route 110 corridor in Westford is seeing plenty of action these days, as residential, commercial and industrial projects move forward, is some cases after years of delay.

"Route 110 is definitely the core of the town's economic base," said Angus Jennings, Westford's director for land use management. "Our economic focus is on Route 110."

It's a focus that seems to be paying off. Cornerstone Square – a major project comprising nearly 240,000 square feet of commercial, retail and restaurant space – is under construction now. The project was tied up in court since 2009, Jennings said, but a May land court decision upheld the permits and the Market Basket-anchored project is moving forward.

Other recent commercial triumphs include: Red Hat will be expanding another 100,000 square feet in Westford Technology Park West, adding to its existing 73,000 square feet of space; and Cathartes Private Investment and Nexamp just installed a 4.5-megawatt solar installation on a 22-acre parcel. The $23 million solar array is the thought to be the largest in New England.

But it's not all commercial development in Westford. The town continues to see strong residential growth as well.

Substantial projects under construction include Graniteville Woods, a 164-unit development, 46 of which are deeded affordable. Jennings said the project is about two-third built.

Princeton Properties was permitted for 308 units in 2008 under a previous developer, but taken over by Princeton Properties, which proposed building 200 units. The development is located at the north-eastern end of Littleton Road.

Summer Village at the Pond has been under construction for the past few years and will include 276 luxury cabins on Long Sought-for Pond.

And Abbott Mill, a 129-apartment development by Tocci Development will refurbish an old mill that was inhabited by Courier Corp.

"It's just a spectacular project," Jennings said.
